About Eliminating or Limiting High Risk Activities

Policy Information:

Activities such as skiing, mountain climbing, SCUBA diving, white water rafting, etc. expose study abroad students to a high risk of injury or possibly even death. Administrators should consider eliminating or limiting such activities from their programs. In general, program sponsors are not responsible "for events that are not part of the program." (United Educators Insurance Risk Retention Group in their series on Managing Liability, p.22 ) Administrators should then be careful to avoid "planning or promoting unsponsored events, and clearly identify the event and the period of time as the participants 'free time'." NAFSA's Guide to Education Abroad for Advisors and Administrators further suggests that the risk be shifted to the students explicitly through releases and disclaimers in contracts that the students sign.
