About Screening
Policy Information:Screening students about their medical history is a very sensitive area. Institutions could do their utmost to provide an arena/forum where students have the ability to self-report medical conditions they have or have a doctor complete a medical evaluation. (SPACE) There may be cases where special medical support may be necessary and advanced planning is crucial. It would be useful to include medical care and counseling/psychological care professionals when discussing, developing and implementing procedures.
Regarding medical history forms, William Hoffa in Study Abroad: A Parent's Guide states: "What is crucial is that the information submitted be current, accurate, and thorough, and that nothing be disguised or hidden from program sponsors… Anything short of full disclosure is also unfair to the program and to its other participants. Programs can assist participants only if all physical and emotional health conditions and requirements are known in advance" (p. 62).
