About During the Crisis: Emergency Action Plan Procedures

Policy Information:

Crises never occur in isolation according to the authors of Crisis Management: A Diagnostic Guide for Improving your Organization’s Crisis- Preparedness. Rather, a first crisis, handled improperly, sets off a chain reaction of other crises. It is essential that the adrenaline, fear, and stress induced by a crisis are channeled constructively during the crisis to avoid conflict, confusion, and further catastrophe. (Crisis Management Handbook, p.18) The crisis management team must be able to work. The home institution should be contacted with complete and accurate information about the emergency while someone on-site keeps a record of the facts of the emergency and actions taken. NAFSA's Guide to Education Abroad for Advisors and Administrators also suggests being prepared for questions from the media with the warning that any statements will be taken as an official statement representing your institution.
