SAFETI Online Newsletter

Volume 1, Number 2, Spring - Summer 2000

Introduction

by Gary Rhodes

The second edition of the SAFETI Newsletter includes discussions of is-sues not dealt with in the first edition, as well as follow-up articles and discussions of issues that were discussed in the first edition, but where there were requests for additional information and guidance. The SAFETI On-Line Newsletter serves to promote the development and dissemination of information on issues related to health and safety and study abroad.

Articles focus on issues ranging from discrimination, sexual harassment and assault, surveying students on challenges to safety abroad, safety tips for overseas travel, and a discussion about alcohol use and abuse in student exchange. Highlighted Web Resources include the International Volunteer Programs Association and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The SAFETI (Safety Abroad First - Educational Travel Information) Clearinghouse Project, develops and disseminates resources to support study abroad program development and implementation, emphasizing issues of health and safety. This is possible using a World Wide Web-based Clearinghouse format, enhancing collaboration between higher education institutions, government, and non-governmental organiza-tions. It is funded through support by FIPSE (the Fund for the Improve-ment of Postsecondary Education) of the US Department of Education, and is a part of the Center for Global Education.

We hope that you find the articles in the Newsletter useful. We will be publishing the Third Edition in Fall 2000/Winter 2001. If you have ideas for articles or experts that you think we should contact, or if you would like to contribute an article, we would appreciate hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Gary Rhodes, Editor and Director
