Study in Italy

Year Abroad- Florence or Rome
Semester Abroad- Rome

The Basics..

Take courses at an Italian university in the Renaissance-era surroundings of Florence or study among the cultural landmarks of Rome. Both cities are so rich in history that they are virtual classrooms in themselves. The Center for International Studies (CIS) offers programs in Italian and English:

Students on Tulane Study Abroad Programs (TSAP) at ICCS and John Cabot University enroll directly at the college abroad. In contrast, students on the Florence TSAP are supported by a Resident Director, who helps them register for classes at the different academic units of the university. The Florence immersion program also begins with an intensive Italian language course before the start of university classes. All courses, grades, and credits travel back with you to Tulane when you participate in a TSAP.

When Can I Go?

Academic calendars in Italy vary from year to year following this general schedule:

City
Intensive Language Program
Fall Semester
Spring Semester
Florence
September
October - February
March - May
Rome - ICCS
N/A
September - December
January - May
Rome - John Cabot

Exact program dates will be provided during the semester before your departure.

Where Will I Live?

Students set up their housing directly with the university or Resident Director abroad. On TSAPs in Italy, housing is either in dormitories or designated student apartments shared with other students at the university. Florence students live with Italian-speaking roommates.

What Are The Costs?

Studying abroad is affordable. Costs vary by program and student lifestyle. Because students on TSAPs pay Tulane University tuition for their studies abroad, most Tulane and federal financial aid applies. Below is an average of the per-semester cost for the 2005-06 year to help you with your budgeting (based on the conversion rate $1.25 = 1 Euro):

Program
Tuition~ + Academic Fees
Living Costs*
(per semester)
Total Estimated Semester Cost
Florence
$16,075
$6,925
$23,000
Rome - ICCS
$16,075
$9,425
$25,500
Rome - John Cabot
$16,075
$10,425
$26,500

~ This includes the cost of Tulane tuition and the required Academic Support Service Fee. The cost of tuition for 2006-07 has yet to be determined. Students are billed through Tulane for tuition and the Academic Support Service Fee, as well as the required International Evacuation Insurance. Students in Florence are also billed for housing and the $500 activity fee through Tulane. Students at ICCS are billed for housing through Tulane as well. Students pay all other costs directly as they occur.

* Living costs vary widely and include housing, meals, books, round-trip airfare from New Orleans, health and evacuation insurance, passport, visa, and personal expenses. They do not include vacation travel.

Am I Eligible?

In order to apply for the program of your choice, you need to meet and maintain the following requirements:

Program
Year
Minimum Overall GPA
Other Requirements
Florence
Junior, Senior
3.0 Completed ITAL 313 and 325 with a grade of B or higher
Rome - ICCS A higher GPA is strongly recommended for this highly competitive program.
Rome - John Cabot None

All students must complete Tulane proficiency requirements the semester before starting a TSAP. Students who have ever been on disciplinary or honor board probation are not eligible to apply.

How Do I Apply?

Begin the process well in advance of the year or semester you plan to study abroad. Deadlines vary greatly, starting with the submission of your CIS study abroad application:

Program
Planned Start of TSAP
TSAP Application Deadline
Florence
Fall Semester (year only)
December 1st (previous year)
Rome - ICCS
Fall Semester (semester only)
February 1st (previous semester)
Spring Semester (semester only)
May 1st (previous year)
Rome - John Cabot
Fall Semester (semester or year)
February 1st (previous semester)
Spring Semester (semester only)
October 1st (previous semester)

Some programs fill up before the deadline so you are strongly advised to submit your application early to increase your chances of being accepted.

A complete application includes a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation from Tulane faculty, one photo and a $50 non-refundable deposit. After submitting their online application, students on immersion programs will also be instructed on setting up a required language interview. Late or incomplete applications will be rejected.

Upon conditional acceptance from the CIS, you will submit an application to the host program abroad. Final acceptance to study abroad is contingent upon this application and your ability to maintain the above eligibility requirements through the semester before departure.
