1. Introduction
According to the American Council on Education, up to 100,000 college students were displaced following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina (www.acenet.edu 9/2/2005). Many of these students have relocated to institutions around the country and abroad. If you are a student who has been affected by Hurricane Katrina, The Center for Global Education at Loyola Marymount University has created this resource to assist you with the challenges you may be facing as you decide where to go from here.
2. What comes next?
With any luck you were able to enroll in classes at another institution this semester in order to continue your education. If you did not attend school, hopefully next semester you can proceed with your studies. Whatever your situation may be, you have a variety of directions to go in. When thinking about the next step, it is important to research options and find resources that can help make it happen.
This site is organized according to the issues you are facing and the options that you have to continue your education. You are encouraged to explore all of your options so that you can make an informed decision. Whether you are able to return to your home institution, remain at your current school, or choose a third possibility, resources and information are provided for you in this site.
If you do intend to return home, a list of resources and exercises you can do before you go home and once you get there are provided in our Coming Home section.
3. Current Challenges and Resources
Wherever you are, deciding how and where to continue your education may be influenced by a variety of issues including your family, finances, and feelings about the changes that have happened in your life due to Katrina. These issues are discussed in detail within this section. Please refer to the suggestions and resources provided here. You can then move on to the specific sections on your educational options and then how to proceed accordingly. We hope that this site will be of help to you.
